Very interesting and has come at the right time for me. I have been stuck on the same amount of subscribers and I’ve been here nearly two years. Yesterday I posted about dementia robing you of your creativity and although I received a lot of support (it was about my dad) I lost 4 subscribers. Sometimes I don’t care if I lose , I’m convinced most of them are bots programmed to unsubscribe when you post. But this felt a little upsetting. I also wonder sometimes if I’m flogging a dead horse. But then I need to remind myself, I do this for fun, I have a full time job, I’m not a writer and I’m not trying to make a living out of it, although I wouldn’t compl if that happened. 😊 Substack messes with your mind.

I think you may wish turn off the information about who unsubscribes. I’ve been losing between 2-10 people each time I post. Rebecca loses a hundred or more because she has a bigger number of subscribers. It is all relative and not to be taken personally. Claire Venus says something like: “thank you for showing yourself out”. In my experience, people who unsubscribe were people who rarely if ever opened/read posts in the first place and rarely liked them and probably never commented so they were not my people.

I don’t have the email that tells me when people unsubscribe? I can just tell cos my numbers are low. I do sometimes think recommendations are a problem, for example I’ve had mates who have signed up to me, and then substack then often tricks them into to signing up to people I’ve recommended! I’ve seen it happen a few times , they often miss the ‘no’ button. I have at least 100 subs through recommendations and I wonder how many were caught in that trap ?? I think substack needs a re think ! It seems only the rich and famous get thousands of subs. I heard Rebecca a say that and thought it’s all relative. It’s so hard to be ok about it ! I’m better some days than others 🤦🏻‍♀️

I got 253 people from a substack that used to recommend me (you know the one I mean) Most of the people who left me over the course of last year were people who came through that recommendation. They were not my people, is what I tell myself. I’ve told you before, compared to me, you get so many more likes, I could really lose sleep over it, if I chose to do that ;)

Thanks Liza , yep I agree it’s either we lose subs because people didn’t even realise they signed up to us , or it’s bots ….. I know , I need to get a grip. Negative by nature ! Glass always empty 😉

I am glass half empty when it comes to myself, so I totally get you. But what I’m great at is champion others and so I’m happy to be here and tell you that I think you’re doing great and I love reading what you post. And judging from the comments and likes you receive, I think you have a great and faithful audience

I have an existential crisis about something a couple of times a year and a few months ago, it was because of Substack. I've given up on saying it won't happen. I think it's just who I am, and more than that, I think I need it. I move into things head on, all in, full force. My "existential crisis" feels like despair... but I think it might be the wiser, quieter part of me taking the wheel for a while and forcing some reevaluation and reflection on what and WHY I'm doing it. I generally come out of it more clear and sometimes with a new game plan. This last time I realized I was way too attached to specific outcomes, and as I write this I realize I could write several paragraphs on what I mean by that, which I will save for another day. Suffice to say, sometimes the despair is necessary to re-align ourselves with our purpose. You are not alone. I'd guess most of the people in this group will know exactly what you're talking about.

So true Rebecca , I’m sure everyone on substack feels this way.

Thank you so much for this live. I was nodding along and chatting back to you, even though I was listening to the recording, haha! It was so reassuring, and helpful. Essential listening, which I think I will save somewhere and listen again when I need it!

I am so happy to hear that this conversation resonated with you, my friend. I think many of us are having the same conversations in our own heads, mulling over the same thoughts and challenges, and it’s nice to know that we aren’t alone.

It happened to Jenn and I we had to shut down completely and re-start.
